Overview

What Is Dental Implants?

A dental implant is the closest thing to a natural tooth that dentistry can offer. A titanium post is placed directly into the jawbone, fusing with the bone over time to create a permanent, stable foundation for a custom crown at the gum line.

Unlike a bridge, an implant stands entirely on its own, it does not require neighbouring teeth to be reduced or altered. Unlike a denture, it does not move, require adhesive, or need to be removed. Once placed and restored, a well-maintained implant can last a lifetime.

At The Dental Atelier, implant surgery is performed by our Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Dr. Mazhar Khan or Dr. Muhammad Ahmed, both certified implantologists. The restorative work, the crown you see is completed by Dr. Aatika.

Comparing Your Options

Implant vs Bridge vs Denture

All three replace a missing tooth, but they work in very different ways — and each comes with its own trade-offs between how it's placed, how it feels day to day, and how it affects the teeth around it.

Dental Implant

A titanium post placed directly into the jawbone, topped with a custom crown — replaces the tooth root as well as the visible tooth.

Stands independently — does not rely on neighbouring teeth

Helps preserve jawbone density at the site

Fixed in place; feels and functions closest to a natural tooth

Requires a healing period of several months before the final crown

Needs sufficient bone density, or bone grafting first

Involves a minor surgical procedure

Dental Bridge

A fixed restoration that anchors to the two teeth on either side of the gap, with a false tooth suspended between them.

Usually completed faster than an implant

No surgical procedure required

Fixed in place — does not move while eating or speaking

Requires reducing and crowning two healthy neighbouring teeth

Does not stimulate the jawbone, which can still shrink over time

Cleaning underneath the false tooth requires extra care

Denture

A removable appliance replacing one or more missing teeth, taken out for cleaning and often overnight.

Suitable for replacing multiple or all teeth in an arch

No surgery required

Can often be adjusted or remade more easily than fixed options

Removable — can shift while eating or speaking

May need periodic adjustment as gums and bone change shape

Some patients take longer to adjust to wearing one comfortably

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do dental implants last?

+

A well-maintained dental implant can last a lifetime. The crown placed on top may need replacement after 10 to 15 years depending on wear, but the titanium post itself is designed to be permanent.

Is dental implant surgery painful?

+

The surgery is performed under local anaesthesia, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some soreness and swelling in the days after is normal and manageable with standard pain relief.

How long does the dental implant process take?

+

From implant placement to the final crown, the process typically takes 3 to 6 months. Most of this time is the healing period during which the implant fuses with the bone.

Can I get an implant if I have bone loss?

+

Some patients with bone loss are still candidates for implants, though a bone graft may be needed first. This is assessed through X-rays and 3D scans at your initial consultation.
